FAQ's

Question: Will joint replacement help me lose weight?

Reply: Joint replacement usually has little effect on the weight of patients after surgery. While joint replacement has been shown to reduce pain levels and improve exercise tolerance, this seldom results in weight loss for the patient. This does not mean that you cannot lose weight after joint replacement. Yet patients will not lose weight simply by having their joint pain addressed with joint replacement surgery.

Question: What are the most common type
of Arthritis?

Reply:

Arthritis simply means swelling of the joint. The different types of arthritic conditions are
  • Osteoarthritis which is caused by excessive wear and tear of a joint
  • Rheumatoid Arthritis which is an auto immune condition which causes the body to attack its own soft tissues and joints
  • Ankylosing spondylitis is associated with back pain
  • Gouty Arthritis is caused by the accumulation of urate crystals within the joint

Question: Will I become addicted to pain medications?

Reply: Treatment of severe and acute pain often involves use of narcotics. Narcotic medications often do not cause addition when prescribed in acute painful conditions. Addiction to these medications is not common, and usually occurs when patients take the medications for effects other than pain relief.

Question: Should I postpone my scheduled joint replacement surgery?

Reply: Patients with arthritis of hip or knee may require joint replacement surgery at some point in future and as advised by the treating doctor. The right time to undergo knee replacement surgery is when no other treatment relieves pain adequately.

Question: How long does ACL tear rehabilitation take?

Reply: When you have ACL reconstruction, a new ligament is created and held in your knee with screws or other fixation devices. The ACL then has to heal in this position in order to withstand repetitive physical stress. The problem with any type of ACL graft fixation method is that, if repeatedly stressed before the graft has healed in position, the fixation will eventually fail. Most orthopedic physicians agree that a minimum of 6 months is needed before returning to competitive sports. Because of potential risks of re-injury, however, most recommend waiting is 7 to 9 months.
